My practice is made up of an overwhelming majority of busy professionals.  What is busy?  Going too fast, in too many directions, for too long of a period.  These people either own a business or are a higher up in said organization.  They most often have multiple kids, which are involved in many school and church activities.  And these people usually have some intense hobbies that require them to be at their physical and/or mental peak.  They demand a lot from themselves in life and others expect a lot from them.  As a result, any feeling of being ‘off’ their game is something they are highly attuned to and know not to ignore.

Supplements are to help someone fill the gap with their micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, amino acids).  But to get the most out of your micronutrients, I encourage you to play with your macronutrients (percentage of carbs, fats, and proteins) first.  There are no micronutrients without appropriate macronutrients.

Another concern is that I like to base supplement programs off of testing.  The following recommendations are based on common symptoms presentation but keep in mind that I could line up 10 people with all the same symptoms and all 10 have difference issues creating that symptom.  In other words, if you try some of these that I recommend and they aren’t helping, you should dive deeper.  Not everyone with poor vision has the same eye glass prescription.

Designs for Health Complete Mineral Complex

This may not sound earth shattering but often times it’s the basics that get overlooked.  Minerals act as helpers in all systems from neuroendocrine to gut/GI, to liver/detox. Several minerals feed into the Krebs cycle (mitochondria) so energy can be made from food. Minerals are also involved in the immune system, hormone metabolism, vitamin metabolism, bone metabolism and reproduction.  With the busy professional always on the go, they tend to have more adrenal demand and one of those roles of the adrenals is to regulate electrolytes with the kidneys.  The problem is that unless you have an ample supply of minerals, the adrenals won’t function well in that regulation.  The faster and harder we push our daily lives, the more depleted we become.

Nutriwest Methyl Renew
Methyl Renew

This supports a process called methylation.  Methylation is one of the most important biochemical reactions in the entire body.  This process, called methylation, is extremely important for maintaining and accelerating many pathways, especially brain neurotransmitters, hormones, detoxification, DNA synthesis, immune system activity and joint health. Methylation promotes healthy cells and regulates the expression of genes.  This isn’t just a B complex but also contains many synergistic compounds to enhance the absorption and utilization of those B vitamins.  I think one of the major ways this sets itself apart from most B complex designer products is that it includes intrinsic factor.

Intrinsic Factor is manufactured in the parietal cells of the stomach and forms a complex with B-12 that allows the B-12 to be absorbed in the small intestine. Vitamin B-12 is not easily absorbed in people with gastrointestinal problems.  The busier one is, the more demanded of that person, the greater the chance their digestive balance has been disrupted.

OrthoMolecular Products Ortho-Biotic 100

Functional MedicineOrtho Biotic 100 is a high-dose probiotic delivering 100 billion active cultures per capsule. Going beyond the threshold of traditional probiotic support, high-dose probiotics influence GI health and immunity in ways lower-dose probiotics cannot.  Why is this important for the busy professional?  With stress levels high, sleep patterns disrupted, food choices not always the best, alcohol consumption, and medication use, the ecosystem that resides in the gut is sure to be disrupted.  With most probiotics in the 2-20 billion range per dose, it’s just not enough for the person on the go.

Designs for Health CatecholaCalm

CatecholaCalmThis is great for that busy professional that is exhausted at the end of the day but their mind won’t stop running.  I often have people describe it as ‘tired but wired.’  People may be experiencing (or have even tested) that their cortisol levels are depleting but often times some other adrenal signals called catecholamines (neurotransmitters) will amp up to compensate.  You’ll see this in conditions like PTSD, people that experience both depression and anxiety, and fibromyalgia.  CatecholaCalm is specifically designed to address this very unique but prevalent set of adrenal hormone imbalances. The product accomplishes this objective by employing adaptogenic, nervine and adrenal tonic herbs that are relaxing, along with nutrients that are designed to help with adaptation to stress and optimization of adrenal gland health. The specific focus is on both cortisol and catecholamine balance. Elevated catecholamines can affect serum blood glucose and insulin levels, and therefore contribute to the development of metabolic syndrome, as seen with elevated cortisol.

  1. I think it’s sort of ironic how so many people keep looking to “supplement” their way to better health. Yes, supplements can offer incredible value but the fundamental stuff needs to be covered first. Do you eat liver and bone marrow (or bone soups)? Do you get sensible sun exposure? Do you eat fermented foods? Do you supplement with magnesium (this is pretty fundamental)?

Love the minerals supplement… or, one could just use more sea salt from an ancient ocean.
